Groote Schuur Hospital

The Groote Schuur Hospital officially opened in 1938 and is one of Cape Town’s premier tertiary academic hospitals. It poses as the teaching hospital for the University of Cape Town’s medical faculty and world renowned as being the training ground for some of South Africa’s best doctors, surgeons and nurses.

The Groote Schuur hospital is also famous for conducting the first human heart transplant in 1967 as well as has a reputation for having a world class trauma unit, anaesthesiology department and internal medicine department.

The hospital also has a museum illustrating the change in world medicine and the first heart transplant, and was declared a Western Cape Provincial Heritage Site in 1996.
